Orange Skies

"Ni ma ma...where do we go?..."

(for senior choir, advanced, SSAA)

"Orange Skies" is a fire-themed, dramatic storytelling piece for SSAA choir with piano and percussion (drum), which starts with gentle 2-part singing, and eventually builds to an exciting 4-part.

Inspired by recent Canadian wildfires, the song reflects on how communities experience tragedy, loss, and the challenges of everyday life in the face of disaster. Drawing on Indigenous Cree fire teachings and storytelling traditions, its moving text and music, raises awareness of the impact of wildfires while honoring the resilience of affected communities and reminding us of our shared responsibility to care for and support one another.

From chills to tears, this is an impactful song for students to learn, and will bring about many emotions in your audience.

This song was commissioned and premiered by the Peace Region Girls Choir on 30 May 2025 at the "Afternoon of Song: Earth, Fire, Wind and Water" concert in Grande Prairie, AB.
